The Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) is a committee created to govern the exploration and use of space for peace, security, development, and the benefit of all humanity. COPUOS’ main tasks are to review international cooperation in peaceful uses of outer space, study space-related activities that could be undertaken by the United Nations, encourage space research programmes, and study legal problems arising from the exploration of outer space. Due to the rapid advances in space technology, the space agenda is constantly changing, and COPUOS provides a unique global platform to monitor and discuss these developments. COPUOS discusses international cooperation in space exploration and the use of space technology to meet global development goals annually. COPUOS has been instrumental in the creation of the five treaties and five principles of outer space, and other space related programs and agreements such as UN-SPIDER, UN-Space, and ICG.

COPUOS is designed primarily for beginner delegates. Though position papers are not required, they are recommended to ensure delegates feel prepared and comfortable throughout the conference.

Topic 1. Near Earth Objects

Topic 2. Long-term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities

Position papers are required for anyone wishing to be eligible for an award.
Position papers are due Friday, October 27th.

I’ve participated in many MUN conferences such as VYMUN, PACMUN and VMUN, but VYMUN holds a very special place in my heart as it was my first ever MUN and taught me many things about the world of MUN in a warm and friendly environment. This year, I hope to make your experience just as fun and welcoming as mine when I was a delegate at VYMUN. Outside of MUN, I enjoy playing hockey, video games, and hanging out with my friends. I wish everyone the best of luck with VYMUN and look forward to meeting you all!

Sam Chen | Chair

As a current junior at St. George’s School, I first immersed myself in the world of Model United Nations in grade 7 and haven’t looked back since. I have attended over 10 conferences as a delegate in my MUN career and am honoured to continue to share my passion for Model United Nations through staffing. I’m an avid public speaker and debater who adores discussing world issues. Outside of Model United Nations, I’m also a spirited athlete and I mainly dedicate my time time in the gym or on the field working on my game. I play basketball, volleyball, and ultimate. I can’t wait to meet all the new delegates and is excited for VYMUN 2017!
