SOCHUM

The Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) is the third General Assembly of the United Nations, whose job it is to retain order and consensus over social, humanitarian and human rights issues from around the world. Some of the facets within SOCHUM include, but are not limited to: human rights, global literacy, women’s rights, children’s rights, the treatment of refugees and displaced persons, international drug control, crime prevention, and the elimination of racism and discrimination. SOCHUM also works conjointly with multiple other bodies of the UN to better address it’s mandated issues.

SOCHUM will run as a double delegation committee at VYMUN 2017. It is designed primarily for beginner delegates. Though position papers are not required, they are recommended to ensure delegates feel prepared and comfortable throughout the conference.

Topic 1. The Protection of Women and Child Refugees Fleeing War Zones

Topic 2. Impact of Slum Tourism on Surrounding Communities

Position papers are required for anyone wishing to be eligible for an award.
Position papers are due Friday, October 27, 2017.

SOCHUM Background Guide

Malika Agarwal | Director |sochum@vymun.com

MalikaAgarwalHey everyone! My name is Malika and I’m a Grade 11 student at West Point Grey Academy. I am so happy to be your director for the Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee this year! In my free time I love to act, sing and dance, cook and I LOVE to eat, as well as I just learned how to surf! Disclaimer: I am not in any way a good surfer. In the past I’ve had so much fun attending Model UNs and I hope that you have just an incredible of an experience as I’ve been lucky to have. If you have any questions about anything, need a quick joke, a friend, or a conversation, I’ve got your back!

VYMUN 2017 will be my 7th MUN, and I hope it is as amazing for you as it has been for me the past 3 years. Other than MUN, I enjoy debate, watching too many crime shows and swimming. I look forward to seeing you at VYMUN 2017!

Isaac La Roy | Assistant Director

IsaacLaRoyI am a grade 11 student at Shawnigan Lake School, and it is my great pleasure to serve as AD on SOCHUM for VYMUN 2017. This is my 3rd VYMUN but my first on staff, and I am delighted to be a part of the conference in such a great way. Since attending my first conference at VYMUN 3 years ago, I have grown to love the atmosphere and intensity of MUN. Over the past 3 years of MUN, I’ve learned to develop better speaking skills and diplomacy. I hopes to use these to become a lawyer one day in the future. When I’m not practicing or participating in MUN, I can usually be found playing sports or being a referee for hockey. I’m looking forward to my 3rd VYMUN a lot and I am excited for the atmosphere the people will bring.

Lauren Wong | Assistant Chair

Hey there, my name is Lauren and I am a Grade 10 student at WPGA. I am very delighted to serve as your assistant chair for SOCHUM this year and I can only hope that you have as much fun here at VYMUN as I did when I first participated in my first MUN back in Grade 8. Besides MUN, I love playing the piano and violin while continuing to try out new things every day. I hope to make your MUN experience as smooth and fun as possible.
